About the Book

Suddenly, a chorus of wails echoed through the lab, a chilling symphony of pain and death. The sound was a horrifying screech that sent shivers down everyone’s spine.

Blaster shots rang out, a desperate volley of light and sound, followed by the approach of footsteps. The steps faltered near the doorway, and a rookie guard named Jasper staggered into view. He collapsed forward, his upper torso sprawled in the doorway, his face and hands marked with savage claw wounds. Blood pooled beneath him, dark and relentless.

“Help me,” he gasped, his voice a whisper of agony. Something yanked him back into the hall, his final scream echoing down the corridor.

For a moment, the scientists were paralyzed by shock. Then Jensen sprang into action, slamming a button on the wall that sent the door sliding shut.

“What are you doing?” Aldin cried. “There are still people out there!”

“The security team can handle themselves,” Jensen replied in an icy tone. “That’s what they’re trained for. But you’re welcome to join them if you’d like.”

Loud pounding on the other side of the door made everyone jump. Aldin glanced at the monitor and saw Ridley, pounding feverishly to be let inside.

“Open the door!” Ridley shouted. “Don’t leave us out here, Jensen!”

Aldin reached for the button, but Jensen grabbed her wrist.

“Don’t you dare,” he hissed.

“But we can’t leave them out there!” she pleaded.

“We can, and we will.”

Jensen ushered the rest of the scientists toward the back of the lab. “We’ll go out the rear door and head down the maintenance corridor to the main lobby.”

Aldin felt a wave of helplessness wash over her, tears streaming down her face. The thought of losing Ridley was unbearable.

“Where do you think you’re going?” Jensen sneered as she tried to join the others. “You’re not coming with us.”

“But… what am I supposed to do?” Aldin’s voice cracked.

“I don’t care. Whatever’s happening out there is your fault. There must be consequences.”

Before she could respond, Jensen led the scientists through the rear door and promptly sealed it behind him. A second later, Aldin heard a decisive click. She was locked in, alone with her fear and the sound of her own breaking heart.
